Tax authorities using a drone

Taxation authorities has since 2013 been using a drone in Menorca to reveal different varieties of illegal construction works. This has been a great success for the government.

tax-droneWe have previously written about how Torrevieja municipality bought a drone to improve safety on the beaches. Now it can be revealed that the taxation authorities of Menorca have a drone which since its inception in 2013 has revealed 2,500 illegal construction works on the island, according to the newspaper La Vanguardia.

The authorities are checking for new constructions, refurbishments, pools etc lacking the necessary building permits. So far, six municipalities have been analyzed: Alaior, Es Castell, Ferreries, Sant Lluís, Es Mercadal and Es Migjorn Gran. Now it remains to analyze the municipalities Mahon and Ciutadella and it is expected that more irregularities will be discovered when these municipalities have been analyzed. Taxation authorities continue using their drone in Menorca, all year round.

The idea of using drones came from an employee at the tax authorities and considering the successful outcome and the low costs a drone entails, it is not unlikely that we will see more tax drones operating in the future (editor’s note).
