Catalonia has banned the use of wild animals in circuses and other public perfomances. Barcelona already introduced a similar law in 2003.

There will be a two year moratorium before the law comes into effect so that affected businesses will have time to adapt to the new law. In the EU there are four countries that have already enacted laws against the use of wild animals in circuses. These are Denmark, Belgium, Switzerland and Portugal.

Partido Popular and Ciutadans voted against the legislation. Animal protection organizations have long fought against the use of wild animals in circuses. They point out that animals are routinely abused to obey animal handlers and have video recordings taken with hidden cameras showing elephants are subjected to electroshock and beaten with hooks during training.
