Technical problems at Eurocontrol, the agency in control of all air traffic over Europe, could affect as much as half of the flights this afternoon.
The source of the technical problems has been identified, but things are not expected to get back to normal until later this evening. Meanwhile many airports are operating at reduced capacity. The delays could also result in cancellations, since planes that are supposed to be parked over night at specific airports might not get to their planned destination within time.
Several European airports have been warning their passengers about the possible delays and asked them to check whether their flight is being affected.
The air traffic control has has not been directly affected, thus there are no safety implications from this incident.
