Spanish traffic authorities, DGT, are warning that the Guardia Civil in cooperation with local police forces are going to perform over 25,000 daily checks before Christmas.
The campaign started yesterday and aims to control drivers who are impaired by alcohol and drugs during Christmas parties, family celebrations and dinners. DGT informs that controls can be carried out at all times of day and on any road. The campaign will las for one week.
Alcohol and drug use are behind about a third of all traffic fatalities so far this year and more than 84,000 drivers have beeen tested positive for drug and alcohol on controls that Guardia Civil have been performing. To these figures must be added controls that local and regional police forces have been performing.
According to the annual report of the Instituto Nacional de Toxicología (sorts under the Ministry of Justice) has 39.09 percent of deaths of drivers are analyzed revealed the presence of alcohol, drugs or psychotropic medication. For pedestrians, this figure is 40%.
The maximum amount of alcohol allowed for drivers is 0.5 gr. / L in the blood equivalent to 0.25 mg. / L in exhaled air. For drivers and those with a new drivers license, the limit is lower; 0.3 gr. / L in the blood, and 0.15 mg. / L in exhaled air.
0.25 mg / L – 0.5 mg / L gives a 500 euros fine, as well as 4 dots on your license.
More than 0.5 mg. / L means 1000 Euro fine and 6 dots. Repeated violations (within a year) gives 1,000 euros in fines and 4 to 6 dots (depending on the alcohol level).
Over 0,60mg. / L in the breathe or 1.2 gr / l in the blood means imprisonment between 3 and 6 months and fines of between 3 and 6 months or community service from 30 to 90 days. Furthermore, it leads to a prohibition to hold a driving license for 4 years. If one refuses to be tested it means imprisonment from 6 months to one year and you are forbidden to have a driving license from 1 to 4 years.
Apart from som exclusive substances that ar contained in prescription medicine, all the presence of drugs in the body of the driver are regarded as a serious offense and is punishable by a fine of 1,000 euros and 6 points on your license. It also can also lead to imprisonment between 3 and 6 months and fines of between 3 and 6 months or community service from 30 to 90 days. Further to a prohibition to hold a driving license for 4 years. If one refuses to be tested, it means imprisonment between 6 months to one year and you will be forbidden to have a driving license from 1 to 4 years.
