Torrevieja municipality intends to terminate the service agreement with the company which operates in local traffic in Torrevieja and put the operations out to tender
It is the company Auto Cares Costa Azul SA, that has been operating the public transport in Torrevieja over the last 20 years. The company, headquartered in Orihuela (Alicante) conducts extensive intercity and moreover public transport in many cities, they have a total of 160 buses and 350 employees. The company was founded in 1923 by two French brothers, while the current owners took over the operation in 1946.
Today’s procurement procedures requires that the service ends, so that the municipality can assess which tender is economically most advantageous, while providing the best possible service to citizens. The current bus consists of seven lines from the center and out to nearby residential areas. Local Bus services will cost the municipality currently has about 3 million euros per year, and the municipality has now asked for technical reports and a cost overview.
Locals have long complained to the municipality over the lines and departures are too few, and that it lacks some important stops.
