5 people were injured in the “Free Fall Tower” in Tivoli World in Benalmadena, Malaga, on the Costa del Sol. The injured are being treated for whiplash but several people were also treated for panic attacks.
The accident occurred on Tuesday evening around 7.30 p.m. When the emergency services arrived, the staff were already treating the injured. There were 14 people aboard the attraction when the accident happened and some of these also had minor cuts and bruises.
In this popular attraction the gondola is being hoisted 60 meters into the air before freefalling down to the earth.
Technicians are now working to find an explanation to the incident, but it seems that an anchoring mechanism failed during the last part of the ascent. Thus the gondola fell much faster than usual and an emergency brake was activated to reduce the speed. Yet the emergency brake was not enough to prevent that several people got injured.
