20,000 inhabitants in the town Sesena south of Madrid has been adviced to stay inside after a fire broke out in a storage area for old car tires on Friday morning.
A large column of dense, black, toxic smoke is moving over the town and the residents have been asked to close their doors and windows and stay inside while extinguishing is in progress. The cause of the fire is still unknown.
The storage area with the old tires is around 100 hectares, ie more than ten football pitches. It is usually very difficult to extinguish tire fires and in some cases it has taken several months to extinguish such fires.
Environmentalists have long warned against the danger of a fire in in this storage area.
