Younes Abouyaaqoub, suspected to be the driver of the white van in the Barcelona terrorist attack

Update at 6.20 p.m.: Catalan police has confirmed that the person killed in the incident is in fact Younes Abouyaaqoub.

The spanish newspaper La Vanguardia reported earlier that the last of the wanted terrorists in the Barcelona and Cambrils attacks, Younes Abouyaaqoub, has been killed by police. This information has now been confirmed by Catalan Police.

Younes Abouyaaqoub has been the most wanted person in Spain over the last three days and is suspected of being the driver of the white van that drove through the pedestrian street La Rambla in Barcelona on Thursday. After the attack in Barcelona, he hijacked a car and killed the driver. The car was later found and since then police had no more traces of Abouyaaqoub, fearing that he might had escaped the country.

According to Vanguardia the location of the wanted has been possible thanks to the collaboration of citizens. A neighbor had seen a man who looked like Abouyaaqoub approaching the houses. When a woman asked him what he was doing there, he ran out in the direction of some vineyards. That is when the neighbor had alerted the authorities. A patrol had quickly approached the area and when they had located him, he had shown what looked like a belt of explosives.

The owner of the vineyard told in a TV interview that after police arrived, he heard about 20 gunshots.

After Younes Abouyaaqoub was killed, the bomb squad used a robot to check if there are were any explosives on the scene.

Just like the five terrorists that were killed in Cambrils on Friday, Abouyaaqoub was wearing a fake bomb belt. It is believed that the terrorists wanted to be killed by police, rather than captured alive and interrogated.
