The ecological supermarket chain Supersano is the first in Spain to ban palm oil in all of their products. More than 100 products have been removed from their shelves.
There has been a reduction in their assortment of baked goods, pastry, cookies, chocolates, snacks etc.
The problem with Palm Oil is firstly that it has a very high level of saturated fat which increases the level of unhealthy cholesterol in the blood. Secondly palm oil plantations are know to cause deforestation in tropical rain forests and often leaving natives with no other options than to leave the affected areas.
Supersano shops can be found in Madrid, Valencia, Murcia, Alicante, Zaragoza, and Albacete and are opening news shops in Málaga, Almeria and Granada during 2017.
Since 2014 manufacturers have been obliged to label which kind of vegetable oil their food contains.
