Thursday morning Primark opened its biggest store in Spain in a landmark building in Gran Via in the heart of Madrid.
The new store was officially opened by Ireland’s ambassador to Spain David Cooney. It will become the world’s second biggest store only beaten by Primark in Manchester and will employ 573 staff.
While Primark previously has opened new stores in shopping malls on the outskirts of urban areas they are now focusing on opening stores in central urban areas.
The Irish clothing chain Primark has a total of 293 stores in Europe of which 42 are located in Spain. In 2015 they opened their forst store in the United States. The first Primark store was opened in Dublin in 1969 by Arthur Ryan under the name Penneys. Primark offers everything from new born and kids clothing, to womenswear, menswear, home ware, accessories, footwear, beauty products and confectionery. Primark sells fashionable clothes to the low cost end of the market.
