No bonfires in Torrevieja on San Juan

The Town Hall in Torrevieja announced on Wednesday that it will be forbidden to make bonfires on San Juan, 23rd of June.

Jumping over a bonfire is one of the Spanish traditions.

The decision has been made in order to prevent littering of the beaches. The councillor of beaches, Javier Manzanares, stated that the beaches in Torrevieja are in a terrible state each year after the San Juan celebration.

Also the bonfires leave rusty spikes and screws in the sand from the pallets and furniture that are being buned. These are difficult to get rid of and pose a danger to people who are using the beaches.

The Policia Local will be patrolling the beaches on San Juan and making a bonfire at the beaches in Torrevieja can be fined between €750 and €3000.
