Never before have so many foreign tourists visited Spain.
The Spanish government announced that this has been the best year ever for the Spanish tourism industry. Between June and September the 31 million foreign tourists have visited Spain, which is an increase of 6.9% compared to 2013. Looking at the entire year so far, ie from January to September there was 52,407,649 tourists to Spain, which is an increase of 7.4% compared to the same period last year. The government hopes that the record from last year’s 60.6 million will be beaten this year. The preliminary estimate suggests that 2014 ends on 63 million visitors.
About half of the visitors come from Germany and the UK, while the Nordic countries during the first three quarters contributed 3,853,284 tourists, an increase of 6.3%.
The most popular destinations are Catalonia, the Balearic Islands (Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza), the Canary Islands and Andalusia. According to the World Tourism “UNWTO” Spain is the third most popular destination in the world after the USA and France. Tourism contributes to 11% of the total economic activity in Spain.
