Several wildfires are raging on the Costa Blanca, one of them is very serious. More than 1,000 people have been evacuated and several homes have burned down.
The most serious fire started on Sunday afternoon at 4 p.m. in Benitexell (Alicante) and quickly spread to Javea (Xabia). The government has evacuated several homes in Benitexell, Villes al Vent, Cansalades Park, Valle del Sol, Valsol, Pinomar, Javea, Tossalet, Toscal, Entrepinos, Cap Martí, Costa Nova, La Guardia Park, Adsubia-Toscamar La Colina, La Finca and Altos de Cabanes and camping Naranjal. At least 20 homes have been lost so far in the fire. The newspaper El Pais writes that 330 people had to spend the night at the Instituto Antonio Llidó, Colegio Santa Maria Magdalena and Red Cross accommodations.
Last night 16 airplanes and helicopters and units from the military (UME) participated to extinguish the fire. The planes had to stop at 9 p.m. because of the darkness. Temperatures above 40 degrees, low humidity (20%) and strong winds (40 km/h) is making the work for the fire fightier difficult. Today there are 20 planes and helicopters working to extinguish the fires and they are assisted by 370 firefighters and 200 soldiers.
Another two fires are raging in the Alicante Province, one in Bolulla and one of Callosa d’En Sarria, near Benidorm.
The fire brigades think it will take several days to extinguish the fires and they also believe that many of the fires are intentional. The ongoing heat wave that clearly makes it more difficult to extinguish the fire, is expected to continue through Wednesday.
