A number of inspections on the Costa del Sol’s bars, restaurants, nightclubs and Chiringuito this summer resulted in 458 fines for employers that hired employees without a legal work contract.
Nearly 1,400 inspections were conducted and and resulted in fines of 1.7 million euros in total, which was given for having employees with no contract or if the employees did not get paid for extra hours. It is well known that businesses are hiring additional personnel during large events that, but the extras are not always hired under legal conditions. The controls were also aimed at wedding events, baptisms and local ferias.
According to Spanish law, the fine for hiring someone without a contract is 3,126. In 42 cases the persons who worked without a contract also received unemployment benefits. In these cases, the employer was fined € 10,000 while the “employees” were asked to repay the amount that they illegaly had claimed.
It is believed that the black economy in the Malaga province is increasing and the unions are asking for more inspections so that businesses can compete on equal terms.
