With the US company FreedomPop you can call and surf at high speed on mobiles or tablets for free, also abroad.
Free phone calls, text messages, surfing the Internet and even international calls to 31 countries (without roaming), it sounds almost too good to be true. It is true, but there are some limitations. The first 300 minutes of talk time, the first 300 text messages and the first 300 megabytes per month are free (the numbers are provisional and subject to change). After that you have to pay between 2 and 3 Euro extra for each service. WhatsApp is however always free on FreedomPop without any limitations.
The service will be available in Spain this summer and they will use Orange as their network provider. To use FreedomPop you have to buy their SIM card and it costs 5 euros. Then you have to download the app FreedomPop on the smartphone or tablet, which is available for both Android and iOS.
The company was founded in 2011 and started its operations in October 2012. The headquarters is located in Los Angeles, where they have 200 employees. Since 2015 they have also been established in the UK where they already have reached over 100,000 customers in less than 12 months – half of whom are not paying anything for the service. Overall they have more than 2 million customers. Before the launch in Europe, they have been backed up by several major companies. The fund for the Europe initiative includes 16.8 million US dollars.
