Tourists seeking the sun are not the only ones who have been coming to Gran Canaria in the last couple of days.
Hordes of flies have lately been invading the Maspalomas area in the southern part of Gran Canaria.
Restaurant owners are telling that visitors are fleeing because of the flies and that the ventilation systems are getting clogged by flies. The shops in the area have also run out of bug spray and other articles against insects.
The reason for the fly invasion is said to be a Calima, hot air from the Sahara that blows over the Canary Islands, bringing sand and insects from Western Africa.
