One person died and 17 people were injured in an explosion in a building in Barcelona at 8 am this morning.
The rescue crews arrived quickly at the scene and there was a fire after the explosion, which was quickly extinguished by the bomberos. The accident occurred in the district of Premià de Mar northeast of Barcelona.
Three buildings were evacuated after the accident and it has been reported that the residents from the buildings that were least affected will be able to go into their homes to retrieve personal belongings during the day. These are the residents of the two buildings adjacent to the property where the explosion occurred that have less structural damages.
Several apartments were severely damaged in the explosion and the residents of the evacueted apartments are now being accommodated elsewhere.
It is not yet known what caused the explosion, but employees from Gas Natural are investigating whether it may be due to a gas leak.
