This summer Torrevieja gets a beach where dogs are allowed. It is located in Vega Baja and is the first of its kind in the area.
Previously, other areas have been proposed, including La Mata and some coves between La Mata and Los Locos etc. But these have now been rejected, mainly because these beaches would then lose their status as Blue Flag beaches.
Blue Flag is an international environmental certification awarded beaches and marinas that meet certain requirements for water quality, safety, services and environment.

The new Dog Beach is an election promise that is now being fulfilled. Coastal authorities are not placing obstacles in the way and has given the municipality a free hand, as long as they remain within the current legislation.
