On September 22nd a cruise ship arrives in Torrevieja for the first time. Expectations from the municipality’s businesses were large, but they will obviously be disappointed.
The ship, owned by Amadea Shipping Company has been hired by the German tour operator Phoenix Reisen. The German company started with cruise in 1988 and now has a small fleet of ships. The ship has a capacity of 624 passengers and a crew of over 250 people.
On this journey, the ship goes from Tangier to Palma de Mallorca, and the ship will be in Torrevieja between the hours. 4 p.m. and 11 p.m. on September 22nd. Passengers, who consist predominantly of German, will be transported to land by two small boats, each 100 passengers.
There is an agreement with the company on a similar visit of something bigger ship Albatros (830 passengers) in 2016. The municipality hopes for more visits and will along with yacht clubs, restaurants and businesses be offering a quality experience.
It now turns out that the ship’s passengers are not going to spend any time at all in the salt town. Passengers will instead be bussed directly to Cartagena and the shopping center La Zenia Boulevard in Orihuela Costa. Shop and restaurant owners in Torrevieja is not happy with this decision and said that the municipality has done little to set up a good program of activities for cruise tourists.
Business owner Society Apymeco in Torrevieja criticizes the mayor of the city for lack of support after he in a meeting reported to have said that “the center is a pigsty and the museums are bad”.
