La Bandera Azul, Blue Flag, is a quality award which is awarded by an international jury which includes the UN Council for Environment and Tourism included. The award is given primarily to the beaches but also for sports and recreation facilities.
Spain holds the highest number of Blue Flag in the world, actually one of six Blue Flags are located in Spain which has 681 flags, and Andalusia in the south of the country is the destination that is most flagged in blue, 98 flags with a total of 122.3 km award winning coastline.
Of the Andalusian cities Cadiz is on top with 32 Blue Flags, followed by Almeria with 28 and Malaga with 24 flags.
Other prizes are awarded; Aula del Mar, Velez Malaga has been given the title Blue Center including accessibility for people with disabilities.
Málaga municipality had recently also receive awards from Tourism Minister Jose Manuel Soria. The municipality has namely been awarded quality mark Q for five beaches: La Misercordia, El Palo, Pedregalejo, El Dedo and La Malagueta – La Caleta. The latter two also have the Blue Flag in the past.
