Calahonda, SpainCalahonda is part of Mijas Costa and is located between Malaga and Marbella on the Costa del Sol. Calahonda is a quiet residential area with many nice homes. Many of the houses in Calahonda are surrounded by beautiful gardens thus you can get away from the city feeling that most of Costa del Sol can give. Many expats have chosen to live in Calahonda because it is close to Marbella, international schools on the Costa del Sol and Malaga airport.
Calahonda has the longest beach on the Costa del Sol. The beach is 4.5 km long and 25 meters wide. It is usually busy on the beach and there are lots of chiringuitos and you can hire sunbeds but the beach also has quiet areas.
Mijas Pueblo is very beautiful with views of the Costa del Sol and is suitable as a day trip. You can get there by car or bus from Fuengirola. Mijas Pueblo is full of souvenir shops where you can buy traditional ceramics and leather goods, visit the very special bull ring, you can take a donkey-taxi or you can climb up to the top of the mountain or enjoy a lovely dinner overlooking the Costa del sol.
The Zoo in Fuengirola is very small, but the space is well utilized. The zoo is decorated with the animal's natural habitat, and you get very close to the animals. In 2004 the Fuengirola zoo was awarded as Europe's best.
Gibraltar is located west of Calahonda and is one of the places to see and experience while you are here.
There are also many nice places to visit just a few hours' journey from Calahonda, such as Seville, Granada and of course Tarifa.
Activities in CalahondaApart from sunbathing, swimming and various water sports, Calahonda and Mijas Costa is known as a golf community. The Costa del Sol has long promoted itself as the Costa del Golf. There are 15 golf courses to choose from in Mijas Costa. The largest is La Cala Resort with three 18 hole courses. Another popular golf course is Mijas Golf strategically located near Fuengirola. It has two 18-hole courses, Los Lagos and Los Olivos. Los Lagos was completely renovated in 2012, for 5 million euros!
The only horse race track on the Costa del Sol, Hipodromo Costa del Sol is located in Mijas, just above La Cala de Mijas. It hosts a range of activities such as horse racing late at night during the summer, sometimes concerts and sometimes horse shows.
The water park in Mijas, Parque Aquatico Mijas, is located at the border between Fuengirola and Mijas Costa. Here you will find water slides for children and adults, wave pools and lots of fountains and small pools for children of all ages. The park is open from late April to late September.
Car hire in CalahondaWhen you need to hire a car in Calahonda there is a wide range of small and large companies to choose from. If you arrive Calahonda by plane you can also pick up your rental car at the airport in Malaga. Read more...
Traveling and transportation in CalahondaMijas is about 25 minutes drive from Malaga airport and about 8 minutes from the local train in Fuengirola. From Malaga airport, you can travel to most major cities in Europe without having to change planes.
With the local train from Fuengirola you can visit several places between Fuengirola and Malaga, such as Benalmadena and Torremolinos. See train tables on www.renfe.com
