Torrevieja is a seaside city located on the Costa Blanca in the province of Alicante in southeastern Spain. It's name derives from the fact that until 1802 it existed only as an ancient guard tower. "Torre" is the Spanish word for tower, and "vieja" means old. Salt is a major industry in Torrevieja due to the fact that it is located between the sea and two large salt lakes Las Salinas. This location gives Torrevieja an extremely healthy climate, which is the primary reason for its popularity among expats in Spain.

Another reason is that Torrevieja is conveniently situated at approximately only 30 minutes drive from both Alicante and Murcia airports, making it easily accessible from most European cities. In recent years the local economy has hugely expanded due to the tourist industry, and Torrevieja is a very cosmopolitan place boasting a strong contingent of British, Irish, Germans, Eastern Europeans and Scandinavians. Many of these live there all the year round, along with many Spaniards who like to have a holiday home on the coast.
